Eugene C. Wittmeyer

Eugene Wittmeyer, Franklin County, has been a leader, educator and public servant in the vegetable potato area of Ohio's agricultural industry. Through educational programs conducted as a professor of horticulture and extension specialist in the Department of Horticulture at The Ohio State University and the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service for 34 years, Gene significantly aided in increasing vegetable and potato Production and quality in Ohio. He has inspired countless students, growers and co-workers to become successful agriculturists. He is recognized nationally as a leader in the vegetable industry. Dramatic results were achieved through his early work with the Ohio Top Ten Tomato Club for growers of tomatoes for processing, his work in establishing a potato cultivar evaluation program, his many publications, newsletters and educational programs. He served for 17 years as secretary of the Ohio Vegetable and Potato Growers Association. He has also assisted the Ohio Potato Growers Association and the Ohio Food Processors Association with educational programs. In 1968, he represented the Ohio vegetable industry in the Trade Mission and Trade Fair in Japan.
