James Utzinger

Dr. James Utzinger, (deceased), was founder and director of the Ohio Home Horticulture Center at The Ohio State University. The motto that he coined for the center was, "Horticulture is everyone's agricultural opportunity." It expressed his philosophy about his work and his life.

Until his death in 1990, Utzinger believed that by successfully growing fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants, all Ohio citizens would become closer to their agricultural heritage. His goals were to educate Ohio citizens in the horticultural pursuits. While teaching comprehensive science and vocational horticulture in the Southwestern City Schools in Franklin County, Utzinger advised one of the first FFA chapters in the state to admit girls as members. He was active in many local, state and national horticultural organizations and had held several offices in the American Society for Horticultural Science. He had served as both association chairman and acting chairman of the Department of Horticulture at The Ohio State University.
